How we start our morning is very important in setting the tone for the rest of the day. Taking the time to rise early and set a morning ritual just for you can be paramount in effecting your overall mood. Getting up and rushing to drink a cup of coffee before you speed out the door to work does little for getting your immune system jump started or your mind centered for what you need to accomplish for the day. Whatever it is for you, it's important to know that you are just as important as everyone else & deserve time to be with just yourself. Sitting outside to enjoy your morning coffee or tea, just listen to the sounds of nature and listen as the world wakes up around you. Bring your yoga mat out to the back yard and say good morning to the sun with a few sun salutations. A brisk walk in the morning can be a perfect way to clear your head and have your mind right & ready for the day. A morning meditation, if only for 5-10 minutes is a great way to relax and allow your mind & body to reconnect. Focus on your breath and get energized for your day! Maybe you wake up extra early and hit the gym, just be sure that whatever you do you don't skip breakfast as it is really the most important meal of the day! Eating a solid breakfast jumps your metabolism in gear and you are more likely to not overeat at lunch or dinner. Small snacks in between meals keeps you metabolism running and you can in turn burn more calories. Nutritionists say a cereal with whole grains and fiber is a great way to start the day, keeping you full until lunchtime. Be sure to always educate yourself & ask your doctor before starting any new exercise regimen or diet. Knowlege is power, so educate yourself and take charge of your mind and your body-they're the only one's we've got!

As a student at Irene's Myomassology Institute I'm learning so much about so many wonderful things-it's literally changed my life. Every week they share healthy tips about improving our lives and eating and living better. I always look forward to my next tip and I have made better decisions on how to be healthier and contribute to my community. I have become passionate about knowledge of the body, how it works and how to make it better. I would like to use this space to share what I have learned as well as post about the different modalities of Myomassology and how they are helpful in maintaining your health. I would love to share these tips and pay it forward so that we may all learn to improve ourselves and lead happier and healthier lives!
The first tip I would like to share is about the importance of drinking water. Water is life. Water makes up approximately 60% of our body weight, and as new borns it is about 75%. Water nourishes every cell in our body helping all of our systems run smoothly and remove toxins. It is the best cure for common ailments and it a great diet aid and fat reducer. Water suppresses your appetite, reduces sodium buildup and helps maintain muscle tone. Not drinking enough water can lead to things such as dry and itchy skin, acne, nose bleeds, constipation, sinus pressure, urinary track infections and headaches.
We are constantly losing water every day; on an average fall day we lose approximately 3-4 cups of water daily just by breathing. Our lungs require humid air to work, the body has to moisturize the air before it gets to the lungs. Ever notice it's harder to take a really deep breath when outside in the winter? That cold dry air makes it hard for us to take air in and the mucus membranes lining your nasal passages and bronchi are not properly hydrated to moisturize the air before it gets to your lungs. So especially now that it's so bitterly cold outside be sure to drink plenty of water, because we could be loosing 5-7 cups of water a day in the winter time. If your fluid intake decreases it can irritate your lungs and perhaps make them more sensitive to dust, cigarette smoke and mold, which could in turn result in a dry cough or even bronchitis.
Pop, coffee and even tea cannot count as water intake, as most of them contain caffeine. Caffeine is a diuretic and will actually accentuate fluid loss in the body, same applies to alcohol. Water plays a huge part in removing toxins from the body. We lose a lot of fluid through urination, and a decrease in fluid intake makes it harder for our bodies to remove toxins. If we do not drink enough water our body will try to find other ways to remove the toxins from our body, such as through the skin which could lead to acne. An excess of toxins in our body can also cause headaches and fatigue.
It is a common trend that the older we get, unfortunately the more ailments and diseases we seem to get as a result. Some think that in the older population the reduction of water intake is a direct correlation to certain health problems. It reduces their body water percentage and many of the physical alterations associated with aging may be due to fluid loss in many of the body's tissues. When there is fluid loss on most of your bodies tissues, they are not lubricated to move and function properly, perhaps causing people to slooow dowwwn a bit.
So......if I haven't given you enough reasons already to drink more water, here's one more-it's free!!! I would suggest buying a good filtered water pitcher for your home and a metal water bottle to take with you on the go, as it keeps it chilled better than a plastic bottle. I am terrible at buying bottled water everywhere I go, not thinking that it takes one bottle approximately 450-1000 years to fully biodegrade! So if you do buy bottled water, please recycle. There is so much more on just this subject alone, I can't share it all! But for everything I post I will share my resources and try to have a book suggestion as well.

I'm trying really hard to break some of my bad habits and adapt new, healthy ones-so this blog is going to help remind me as well the wonderful things I can do to be healthy. Other subjects I'm excited to write about are Myomassology modalities like Shiatsu, Reiki, Myofascial Release, Orthopedic Assesment and Hot Rocks. I'm am also very influenced by yoga and mediation, and I've learned many benefits of healthy living such as the the benefits of exercise, recycling, how to properly check your produce and the dangers of processed foods and refined sugars. Knowledge is power, and I am currently addicted to expanding my education in holistic practices!
