Ferndale Yoga, massage, meditation and wellness
Meditation is a mental dicipline that helps you let go of your normal, reflexive thinking that helps your reach a deeper level of awareness and insight which in turn can lead to relaxation and clarity. Meditation has it's roots in several religions, but it is also practiced by many non-religious practioners as well. The goals of meditation vary. As some would strive for a higher state of awareness and spiritual development, others are looking for things such as better focus and creativity, physical and emotional healing, better insight, stress reduction and relaxation just to name a few.
There are 4 types of meditation techniques one can use in their practice, the first involves using a focus. The goal with this technique is leaning to focus and concentrate. We work to train our minds on focusing on an image, whether it be a candle, an object in the room, or simply your breath. In this we can harness the ability to calm and stabilize the mind, recognizing uncontrolled thinking patterns and learning to relax quiet our thinking.
Secondly there is using mindfullness. In this practice we learn to be mindful of both ourselves as well as the world around us. Here we concentrate in things such as the subtle sensations in our body and the content of our conscious thoughts. Throught this type of meditation we can observe mental habits that may create negative thought patterns and hold us back from things in life. We learn to be in the presents moments, letting go of the past as well as the future. In this we can learn to bring that mindfullness with us out into our everyday lives, so we do not travel through life on 'auto-pilot' and live in the present moment.
The third type of meditation is focusing on a topic. During your meditation you simple choose something that you would like to work on personally such as patience, anger, forgiveness or acceptance-or you can choose a topic that would help society such as world peace or clean water for third world countries.
Lastly we can use the senses in our meditation. Engaging the senses we can help harness the mind's power to create it's own reality. Listening to music or the sounds of nature can help bring you into a relaxed, meditative state. Also, we can use voice, being that of your own voice by using a chant or mantra in your meditation or listening to a guided meditation that can help ease you into relaxation and visualize the reality you wish to inhabit.
The benefits of meditation are virtually endless, but we'll go over a few here. Physically meditation can help your body in many ways. Simply by meditating on your breath you can lower your blood pressure, slow your heart rate and reduce anxiety. Meditation can be used in conjunction with traditional or alternative treatments for illnesses such as cancer to help alleviate symptoms and anxiety related to those conditions. In addition to the benefits mentioned above, meditation can also bring you mental contentment, clarity, enhanced sleep quality and longevity to your life. I will be hosting an Introduction to Meditation Workshop at the office Tuesday November 19th-here we will go over the information I've mentioned here, plus more information in packets for you to take home and we'll be doing some of my own guided meditations as well. To get a preview, please visit my 'Meditation Station' on YouTube and see what we will be going over in that workshop-meditating in a group is extremely helpful and enjoyable, as you can share experiences and feel the collective evergy in the room. I hope to see you there, tickets are only $10 and I'll be sure to give you plenty of resources to take with you! Be well and I'll see you to get your 'Om' on!
